VPS REPORTING TOOL
Project Overview
THE TASK
Value Payment Systems (now Catalis) is an online payment processor focused on government clients. They needed an updated front-end design for the Reporting Tool their clients use to generate payment reports. The tool is used daily by both VPS account managers and by the clients taking payments who need the tool’s reports to track deposits, pending transactions, and charge backs.
MY ROLE
UI designer and Front-end developer
GOALS
- Design an intuitive, modern front-end that would require little training for existing users.
- Most users utilize the tool on a desktop monitor, but the tool also needed to be responsive and optimized for mobile.
TOOLS
Adobe Illustrator CC (Wireframes and UI Design), InVision (Prototype), Brackets (Coding front-end)
CHALLENGES
- The reporting tool packs a lot of functionality in a relatively small interface. The search criteria can be simple or extensive as needed by the user, but the report presented always contains a table with a plethora of data points.
- The updated Reporting Tool also needed to reflect VPS’s new branding logo and colors while ensuring longtime users did not feel lost.

SOLUTION
The Reporting Tool was coded with a responsive design for ease of use on any device. The new VPS company branding was used throughout the new design in a way that insured our clients were not confused about the updated tool. The extensive payment data presented in the report table was coded to reveal any table columns that ran off of the user’s screen when the user scrolled right.
RESULTS
The Reporting Tool client users provided feedback saying that the new design provided them with a more intuitive UI that was quick to learn. The internal VPS account managers consulted on the design throughout the process, and were glad to finally have a more useful product.
